Ever wonder what it’s like to work on the UI/UX design team at Calendly? Our UI/UX designer, Anna Jones, gives us a peek of her role, favorite projects, and her ‘squad’ team at Calendly.
What led you to Calendly?
I was previously working at another scheduling software company and when I saw an opening at Calendly, I jumped on it! I knew Calendly was local to Atlanta, had a high bar for design, and was involved in the community — I couldn’t pass on this amazing opportunity!
What do you do at Calendly? What are some of the challenges you get to tackle in your role?
I’m a UI/UX designer. In my role, I get to tackle problems that range from new feature brainstorming to delivering pixel perfect designs and seeing those through to development. Each step of the way there are different challenges to tackle, so I try to be as flexible as possible in understanding the problem and providing thoughtful feedback.
What’s unique about the work you do?
I truly work end-to-end. Calendly drives innovation, so I’ve had the opportunity to work from the inception of a feature all the way through to designing it and delivering it. I never find myself stuck or solving the same problems over and over again. Challenges not only encompass UX problems, but also processes within our design team and on our squads.
What does your typical day look like, if there is one?
A typical day always involves collaboration, either with other designers, product managers, researchers, or content strategists. As we diversify our team I find that I’m learning an incredible amount from new team members, especially in UX research and content strategy!
What has been your favorite project at Calendly so far?
I’m going to say it… all of them! I got to work on our Figma migration and creating our UI Library. It’s something that we’re always working on and evolving.
Tell us more about the people you work with on your team.
I spend most of my time with my “squad,” which is our agile team: a few developers, an engineering manager, QA engineer, and a product manager. We’re all extremely collaborative and open to feedback. It’s clear from everyone on the team that our passions lie in making Calendly the best we can, from improving UX to making sure we don’t incur tech debt.
What do you enjoy most about working at Calendly?
I hate to sound like a broken record, but the collaboration! I never feel like I ask a stupid question, and I feel extremely comfortable in asking questions when I don’t quite understand. This is so important to me because it’s part of how I learn. At Calendly, I get to be productive, produce awesome designs, and continue to be challenged and learn. What more could I ask for?
Okay, let’s chat about your life outside of Calendly!
Outside of work, I love hanging out with my animals. I have a dog and a cat. I also love cooking and trying new recipes with my boyfriend and friends. And I snowboard as much as I can!
Your favorite spot to visit in Atlanta?
This is tough! There’s a chocolate shop in Virginia Highlands called Cacao Cafe. Go check it out! Also, you’ll probably find me with some friends (also part of Calendly’s design team, Rachel and Sam) at the wine bar at 8ARM!
What are three things most people don’t know about you?
I figure skated competitively as a kid in both pairs and singles.
I play the bassoon. Kudos if you know what that is!
If you know me, you might think I drink a ton of coffee, but I actually really like holding a warm mug because my hands are always cold! (... I may also drink too much coffee sometimes.)
What advice would you give to job seekers or recent new hires?
Besides the obvious goal of getting a job in your desired industry, look for the right culture fit. Make sure your values line up to your future team and company’s values. When you have that fit, you’ll be with that company for a long time.
