Celebrating Pride through the power of allyship

Society has experienced remarkable shifts in the recognition and acceptance of the LGBT+ community. While legal victories and cultural transformations have helped propel the movement forward, it remains clear that challenges persist. A myriad of anti-LGBT+ laws have been recently proposed and introduced in many states and it reminds us that the journey towards true equality continues.In an effort to foster a more inclusive and compassionate society, Calendly is taking time to shed light on what it means to be an ally, emphasizing the importance of allyship, and providing practical guidance on how to be an ally both inside and outside of the community. This Pride Month, join Calendly as we explore the power of allyship and take action to support the LGBT+ community. 

Allyship encompasses support from individuals outside the LGBT+ community as well as those within it. It is a collective effort that recognizes the need for solidarity and understanding among all community members. Within the LGBT+ community, allyship involves acknowledging and respecting diverse experiences, identities, and perspectives. It means uplifting and advocating for marginalized voices within our own community, especially those belonging to intersecting marginalized identities. Allies play a significant role in challenging societal norms, advocating for policy changes, and creating inclusive spaces.

How can you get involved and activate as an ally?

Educate yourself

Begin by learning about the LGBT+ community, its history, terminology, and the challenges faced by its members. Learn about issues such as gender identity, sexual orientation, intersectionality, and the impact of discrimination. Seek out credible sources, attend workshops, training sessions, and engage in conversations with individuals from the community to expand your understanding.

Respect gender identity

Respect a person's self-identified gender and use their preferred name and pronouns. Educate yourself on the proper use of gender-neutral pronouns like "they/them" and be diligent in getting it right. Show respect by actively using the correct name and pronouns in all interactions.

Listen and validate 

Actively listen to the experiences, perspectives, and concerns of others without judgment or interruption. Be open to feedback and willing to unlearn any biases or misconceptions you may hold. Offer validation and support, making space for individuals to express their authentic selves. Keep in mind that it is not the place of LGBT+ individuals to educate allies, so approach conversations with humility and a willingness to learn.

Use inclusive language

Language is a powerful tool that can either include or exclude. Be mindful of the language you use, respecting individuals' preferred pronouns, and avoiding assumptions about someone's gender identity or sexual orientation. Familiarize yourself with inclusive terminology and begin incorporating it into your everyday conversations. 

Be an active advocate

Stand up against homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination whenever you witness them. Use your voice and privilege to challenge harmful stereotypes and create a safe space for dialogue and understanding. Advocate for LGBT+-inclusive policies and practices within your workplace, community, and beyond.

Support LGBT+ organizations

Get involved with local LGBT+ organizations, nonprofits, or charities. Offer your time, resources, or skills to support their initiatives and amplify their work. By contributing to these organizations, you can help create positive change on a broader scale.

Foster Inclusive Spaces

Actively work to create an inclusive environment within your workplace, school, or community. Encourage diversity and ensure that LGBT+ individuals feel safe and welcome.

It is important to remember that allyship is an ongoing process that may not always be linear and is definitely not a destination. In your approach to allyship, you should be open to learning, receptive to feedback, and willing to unlearn any biases that may exist in your thinking. Be willing to evolve and adapt your approach as you gain a deeper understanding of the community's needs and experiences. Allyship holds immense power in fostering solidarity, inclusivity, and progress within and beyond the LGBT+ community. By standing together, both within our community and alongside those outside of it, we can create a society that celebrates and embraces the full spectrum of identities and experiences.
